HOW DOES AN AIR SOURCE HEAT PUMP WORK?
Traditionally, the systems used to heat our homes rely on the combustion of a fuel source; fires burn wood and boilers use gas or electricity to produce warmth. However, this is not always efficient nor environmentally friendly due to the cost of fossil fuels and their impact on the climate.
This is where air source heat pumps vary as they don’t technically generate heat. Rather, they harness it.
Here is GE National’s guide to air source heating and its many benefits.
HOW IT WORKS
If looked at in its simplest form, an air source heat pump operates in a very similar way to a regular fridge. The process is simply reversed, generating hot air rather than cold. Air source heating units are usually fitted to an external wall of a building, drawing in air from the outside and increasing its temperature. Firstly, the air from outside then flows over tubes filled with a refrigerant which warms the refrigerant liquid, turning it to a gas. Then, using a small amount of electricity and a compressor, the pressure of the gas is increased, causing it to heat up.
Once compressed and heated, the refrigerant transfers its heat to an exchanger filled with either air or water which is then pumped into your home to provide either hot water or heating for appliances.
WHAT CAN THEY HEAT?
There are a number of applications for air source heating, including radiators, underfloor heating and hot water. However it does depend on the temperature outside of your home, the warmer the outside climate is, the less work required by the heat pump to generate warmth.
With this in mind, it is worth noting that heat pumps are well suited to underfloor heating as, due to the larger surface area of an underfloor system, less heat is needed to warm a room.
GE NATIONAL: AIR SOURCE HEAT PUMP INSTALLATION
Air source heat pumps are a brilliant means of providing warmth for your home. Not only are they far more eco-friendly than traditional heating methods such as gas boilers, but they also cost less to run and require very little maintenance.
What’s more, air source heating systems can be implemented alongside other renewable energy solutions such as solar panels and are even included in the UK green homes grant. If you’re considering upgrading your heating system to a more sustainable alternative, look no further than an air source heat pump from GE National. Our team of specialists are always on hand to answer any questions you may have. From your initial free quote, up to installation, we pride ourselves on our customer service.
