The Future of Electric Cars: What to Expect

May 27, 2023

Electric vehicles were all the rage when they first came out – revolutionary in the world of transport. Nowadays, gone slightly is the novelty surrounding them, instead they have been implemented into the car market seamlessly to the point where they are now extremely accessible and people often weigh up the consideration between buying an electric car or a fuel-powered one.

So, that covers the past and the present, but what could the future of electric cars look like? Read on below as we summarise a few of the possibilities.

SMART SURFACES

This one is perhaps one of the lesser guaranteed changes, at least for the near future, but many people have proposed and contemplated the idea and possibility of taking our roads to the next level in the age of electric cars. Rather than having a regularly paved road, the notion of smart surfaces is that special technology will be laid into roads so that your electric vehicle can be continuously charged whilst you’re driving across it.

Like we said, this is likely to be implemented much further into the future, although it would certainly make the global transition to electric driving much easier and more practical, even if it were to solely be implemented on motorways before becoming more widespread.

ELECTRIC CARS > PETROL CARS

It goes without saying that electric cars are most likely going to dominate the road in upcoming years. In the UK alone, the manufacture and sale of new petrol and diesel cars will be banned after 2030 and only electric cars will be available for sale as brand new, with the exception of hybrid cars until 2035.

There has been a rapid rise in the number of electric cars on British roads already; when comparing figures of new electric cars registered in December 2022 compared to the same month in 2021, 52.62% more electric cars were registered. They have already overtaken diesel in popularity, and though petrol still remains the favourite choice (especially for used cars), with the government ban coming into force this is likely set to change, also.

EV CHARGING SYSTEMS AS THE NORM

With the rise of electric cars comes the rise of electric car chargers. Due to the length of time that they take to charge, most people have an EV home charger installed when they invest in their electric car. This means that a large majority of petrol stations will likely be repurposed as public charging stations, making it even easier to use and charge your vehicle on the go.

Furthermore, when visiting friends or staying at hotels or BnBs, it is likely that these will all have EV chargers, too, so your lifestyle will still be catered to.
