WHAT IS AN AIR SOURCE HEAT PUMP?

May 30, 2023

Nowadays clean renewable energy is paramount to ensuring the future of our planet.

An air-source heat pump is an alternative way to heat your home by generating your own renewable heat. It takes heat from the outside air and boosts it to a higher temperature using electricity and a compressor system. It then transfers the heat into your heating system to be used immediately or stored for later use. The immediate application is your heating while the stored heat is used for taps, showers and baths. It’s popularly known as working like a refrigerator in reverse!

THE TWO TYPES OF AIR SOURCE HEAT PUMPS

AIR-TO-WATER HEAT PUMPS

Air-to-water heat pumps take heat from the outside air and feed it into your wet central heating system. They can be used for underfloor heating or large radiators, being most effective when they have a large surface area to release the heat.

AIR-TO-AIR HEAT PUMPS

The second type of air source heat pumps take heat from the outside air and feed it into your home through fans, using a warm air circulation system. In the summer the pump can even work in reverse, acting like air-conditioning. One drawback of this type is they cannot produce hot water, so an air-to-water heat pump is the preferred option if you want this feature.

THE BENEFITS OF AN AIR SOURCE HEAT PUMP

REDUCED FUEL BILLS

The pump uses electricity to run but uses less electrical energy than the heat it produces. That way your home is kept warm in an energy-efficient manner that will save you money on an expensive fuel bill. Your heat pump can also work in conditions below zero, meaning you won’t have to worry about waiting ages for your pipes to thaw in the winter.

SOLUTION FOR THE WHOLE HOUSE

If you switch to electrical heating, you’re still relying on a boiler for hot water. With an air source heat pump, the heat that isn’t used immediately to warm your house is put into storage. This stored heat can then be used to keep your water hot in your taps, showers and baths.

EASY INSTALLATION

Air source heat pumps are usually installed outside at the side or back of a property, with plenty of space for air to circulate around. Inside there will be another unit normally smaller than a boiler that contains pumps. There is no digging required so installation won’t damage your property.
