A Typical Day in a Home

With Solar Panels and a Battery

If you've never lived with solar, it's hard to picture what it actually does. The panels sit on the roof, something hums in the garage, and an app shows a lot of green numbers. But what's really happening, hour by hour?

Let's walk through an ordinary day in a home with a solar and battery system, and show what each part is doing as it goes.

Early morning: the quiet start

At 6am the panels are producing almost nothing, so the house runs on what's left in the battery from yesterday. The kettle goes on, the heating kicks in, and nobody notices the switch, because the inverter handles it automatically. The inverter is the brain of the system. It decides, second by second, whether the house should draw from the battery, the panels or the grid.

You won't hear it either. The Hanchu hybrid inverter we fit is rated at around 30dB(A), which is about the level of a whisper. It sits on the wall and gets on with the job.

Mid-morning: the panels wake up

By 9am the sun is up and the panels are working. The LONGi panels we install are built to squeeze as much as possible out of the space they have, with efficiency of up to 24.3%. Weaker morning light still counts, and the panels are designed to keep performing when part of the roof is in shade.

If your roof faces two directions, the inverter can handle each side separately, so the east-facing panels get their moment in the morning and the west-facing ones peak in the afternoon. Whatever the house is using gets served first, straight from the roof.

Midday: more power than you need

Around lunchtime, the house often makes more than it uses. Everyone's out, the fridge is ticking over and the washing machine has finished. Instead of sending all that spare energy to the grid, the system tops up the battery.

This is where the numbers on the battery start to matter. Our Hanchu battery holds 9.4kWh, and 95% of that is usable, so around 8.9kWh is there for you to draw on. Some batteries keep a big chunk in reserve and never let you touch it, so it's always worth asking about usable capacity when you compare quotes.

Once the battery is full, any surplus can go to the grid. Depending on your supplier, you may be paid for it through the Smart Export Guarantee.

Evening and overnight: the battery earns its keep

By 4pm the sun is dropping and the panels are fading out. The house is filling up again, with kids home, the oven on and lights coming on. This is when many households used to buy power from the grid at its most expensive.

With a battery, the inverter quietly switches over to stored energy. There's no click, no delay and nothing to press. You keep your evening the way you always did, but you're using power you made hours earlier.

Late afternoon: the handover

Through dinner, TV and bedtime, the battery does the heavy lifting. If it runs out in the small hours, the grid simply takes over, so you're never left short. A UK winter can be cold, and the battery has built-in heating so it charges and performs properly even in an unheated garage.

What you'd see in the app

The whole day is recorded in the Hanchu app. You can see what the panels made, what the house used, how much went into the battery and how much came from the grid. Some people check it obsessively for the first week and then forget about it. Either way, it's a clear picture of where your energy is going.

Built to be forgotten

The best sign of a good system is that you stop thinking about it. The panels on our systems carry a 30-year warranty, and the battery and inverter each carry 12 years. It's a lot of years of quiet, automatic work.

Could this be your home?

Every house has its own rhythm, and the right system depends on your roof, your shading and when you use power. We'll look at all of that and give you clear, honest numbers, with no pressure.

Product details are taken from manufacturer datasheets. Actual performance and savings depend on your property, usage and installation.
